EQUITY IN EDUCATION FINDS TROUBLING DATA ON SUSPENSION RATES AND ACCESS TO AP COURSES IN APS

August 13, 2024

ATLANTA — On Tuesday, August 13, Equity in Education (EiE) released its Atlanta School Quality Data Map. Distinct from other publicly available data, the interactive map allows for Atlanta Public Schools stakeholders to easily identify their cluster and explore relevant data on all schools within that cluster—including charter, state charter, partner and non-traditional schools. Stakeholders have the option to compare year-to-year data across clusters allowing for a more complete picture of a school’s quality. For greater accessibility, EiE has limited the data captured to graduation rates, reading and math proficiency rates, student demographic data, and suspension rates.

EQUITY IN EDUCATION RELEASES STATEMENT ON ‘THE GEORGIA PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP ACT’ (SB233)

February 13, 2024

ATLANTA — On Tuesday, February 13, Equity in Education (EiE) released a statement calling on lawmakers to renew their commitment to public education in Georgia. SB 233 also known as ‘The Georgia Promise Scholarship Act’ or the “voucher bill” is potentially being reconsidered in the House after a 89-85 loss in the 2023 legislative season. If proponents of the bill are successful in flipping the votes, the measure could pass this legislative season.

EQUITY IN EDUCATION RESPONDS TO ATLANTA BOARD OF EDUCATION PROPOSED LITERACY POLICY

December 4, 2023

ATLANTA — On Monday, December 4, Equity in Education (EiE) contacted Atlanta Board of Education (BOE) members requesting to delay the Board’s vote on its proposed Literacy Policy at tonight’s School Board meeting. With 37% reading proficiency across the District, EiE applauds the Atlanta BOE for responding to the urgent needs of its students and families. However, after a review of the policy, Equity in Education is recommending voting be delayed until community input has been addressed regarding the inclusion of accountability measures. 

EQUITY IN EDUCATION CONGRATULATES ATLANTA SCHOOL BOARD INCUMBENTS AND NEWLY ELECTED BOARD MEMBER KEN ZEFF

November 8, 2023

ATLANTA — On Wednesday, November 8, Equity in Education (EiE) congratulated Atlanta Board of Education members on their election victory. Equity in Education had previously endorsed candidate Nkoyo Effiong Lewis for At-Large Seat 9 challenging incumbent Jessica Johnson. While EiE expressed a clear choice for Seat 9, the focus remains on the 50,000 students in Atlanta Public Schools. EiE looks forward to continuing to partner with members of the Board to advance equitable policies across the District.  

EQUITY IN EDUCATION ENDORSES CANDIDATES FOR AT-LARGE ATLANTA SCHOOL BOARD RACE

ATLANTA — On Tuesday, October 3, Equity in Education (EiE) announced the endorsement of At-Large Atlanta School Board Candidates Alfred ‘Shivy’ Brooks, Seat 7, and Nkoyo Effiong Lewis, Seat 9. EiE is proud to support candidates who will bring their experience as classroom teachers and deeply engaged community members to the Atlanta Board of Education.
